Greetings, alumni brothers of Alpha Tau,
I sincerely hope my greeting finds you in good spirits, enjoying the warmer weather now that spring has arrived. However, I am writing to you today to alert you of an urgent matter we may face at our beloved 117 East State Street for the school year 2026/2027. We are searching for and need a house director for the upcoming school year. This requires the individual to live in the house with the brothers during the school year. Not fulfilling this requirement will jeopardize the ability for Theta Chi to have a home at Ohio University.
One of the basic requirements imposed on all fraternities is employing a house director, or proctor to live in the house with the actives and perform their duties as proctor. See job description below. Certain changes to the requirements are making it difficult for us to secure a house director for the upcoming school year (September ’26 thru May ’27). In particular, the requirement for a person to be removed from school 2 years before being eligible to be a proctor has become more challenging for us than in the past.
No longer are the days when a graduating brother could turn around and become a proctor living in the house as a graduate student the next school year. This is the very thing we relied on for so many years since it was such a good deal for a brother to live in the house rent free in exchange for being proctor. As such, recruiting brothers or graduate students in their second year of graduate school makes it tough and the stipend approach as payment appears now to be a thing of the past.
When attempting to recruit through normal means, the candidates who respond are individuals that are way over-qualified and looking to manage big houses and get paid appropriately to do so. Most of these candidates also require separate living quarters but within the house that include their own facilities. This is not our situation. The university has given us resources, and we have also expanded our efforts to include advertising on sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Craig’s list, etc..... along with the university’s suggestions.
Let me be very clear, if we cannot fulfill the requirement for retaining a house director, brothers will be unable to live in the house this coming school year. We continue to operate as Alpha Tau, but without 117 East State Street.
For this reason, the House Corporation is asking for your help in locating valid candidates for this position. A candidate does not have to be a brother, but a responsible individual who will be a professional about the job. Any men you (or your significant other) may know such as people you work with/colleagues/personal friends or relatives/anyone looking for cheap place to live in Athens while going to school. Or perhaps an individual looking to go back to school. We can negotiate payments, stipend or otherwise.
Brothers, any type of assistance you could possibly provide would be magnificent given the urgency of the matter. House Corporation is working diligently as we can to fulfill this position now and avoid further action that may take place. We also are researching and having discussions on ways to create a smooth transition any time we replace house directors in the future. If you want to participate in those discussions or have any questions or comments for the House Corporation, please contact either me or our Treasurer Geoff Penney. Thank you Brothers!
Love & Respect always,
Marty Evans
